Bio:

Background/History: Ben Tanner loves life, loves fun, loves travel, loves partying, loves babes. Unfortunately Ben doesn’t love work which seriously ticked off his dad, the founder of a garment industry fortune. So when Dad died he left the care of the trust fund and the job of riding herd on Ben to his less than loveable, humorless, but totally reliable brother Herman. Herman laid down the law to Ben, get a profession or get a job! Now Ben, for all is foolishness is no dope, in fact he’s really rather briliant, so he chose archaeology, reasoning that this allowed him to travel extensively to exotic locales. Herman, reluctantly, agreed to this choice but demanded that Ben achieve in this field and must frequently publish and ultimately get tenure.

OK thought Ben, and he immersed himself in the history of the ancient Jewish communities of Iraq and Iran. One day, deep in the archives of one of the ancient synagogues of Baghdad he found a scroll hidden under a pile of old records. Blowing off the dust that caked the scroll he saw the seal of the legendary Key of Solomon! The next year held alot of change for Ben. First he published his dissertation on the ancient Jewish communities of Iraq and got an adjunct teaching position at Empire State University he also translated the scroll he found.

And what a scroll! Ben had discovered the last, unexpergated copy of the Zohar, the ultimate key to Jewish Kabbalistic mysticism. With this book he discovered he could alter reality, move the satilites in orbit like shuttle cocks (“I’m real sorry about those communications satilites. Sorry guys!”) and even warp the shape of reality to teleport between locations. WOW!!!

Ben decided the best way to research this new power before he publlishes and thereby achieves great fame and wealth (so he thinks) is to don the cape and go into the super hero biz. (“Hey, those babes in the tight spandex look really hot! Besides have you ever heard of a super being snubbed at the velvet ropes of any club? Hmmm?”)

So off Ben went and soon made quite a name for himself. First of all he’s a showoff who loves to humiliate the villains and pander to the media. The media, in turn, loves him back as he’s always ready for a sound bite or some juicy bit of super gossip. More than that, the Magus (his nom-de-super) really likes people. He’s a ham having fun and invites everyone to join in.

Unfortunately all this exposure has drawn the attention of the Kabbalic Circle, a small but awsomely potent group of Kabbalic scholars. It was their doing that altered all the copies of the Zohar to mystic impotence (so they thought!). They’re aware that there’s a new Power in the world and they’re afraid some Yahoo’s going to publish the “secrets of the universe for $19.95”, thereby leading to chaos. You can bet if they ever get their hands on him Ben’s gonna get co-opted or smashed flat quick!

Personality/Motivation: The Magus is a fun loving guy. He loves all of life and wants everyone to join in. Yes, he is a media ham and he does alot of seemingly foolish things but his heart is pure gold! Just ask any kid who’s threatened by a mugger/bully that the Magus caught. The guy just HATES bullies, crooks, rapists, and not to mention the standard megalomaniac super-villain!

He loves to play to the crowd and will often take time (on occasion in the middle of combat) to sign autographs, shake hands, have photos taken, and talk up attractive women.

The Magus does have a dark side. When he percieves that innocents or the weak are being preyed upon, He gets “Old Testament” on their ass. “Real Wrath of God Stuff”

Powers/Tactics: He loves to use his TK to pickup the bad guys by their feet and bang them into the ground on their heads. He will use his Teleportation to maneuver and make him harder to hit. He often prefers to use his PRE attack to convince perps to desist and turn themselves in.

Campaign Use: The Magus has an “angel” watching over him. Simply put “the big guy” is peeved at the inactivity of the Kabbalic Circle and wants an agent of good active in the world. Yes, Ben is a flake but in reality he’s a “tsadik”, a righteous man, and The Eternal wants him out there. The character is fundamentally “light” in nature but prone to get REALLY nasty when his sense of justice is offended.

Appearance: When Ben puts the Mask on a complete change takes over his body. He then appears to be dressed in a form fitting dark blue spandex type outfit with the Kabbalic Tree of Life on the chest and abdomen. A standard dark blue mystical “Doctor Strange” cape and, the most noticeable feature, his mask. The mask is the essence of the Magus, it appears to show a golden handsome bearded man (like a bearded Apollo with piercing blue eyes) with a crown. In fact, when the mask is activated Ben’s entire body appears to be composed of a golden, apparently glowing, skin tone with the same plasticity as normal skin.
